Serve on the King's Highway!

Finished your exams? Recently ended a job? Searching for God's will for your life? Or do you just want to break away from everyday life at home and see what God's Spirit is doing in the Middle East? Join our short-term programme on the King's Highway! Three months in Israel or one of the surrounding Arab countries. You'll be involved in supporting existing local ministries by assisting in health and social care projects, technical maintenance, repairs, odd jobs etc. In addition, you'll receive an indepth introduction to the land and culture of the Bible.

NEM has over 40 years' experience in sending people out to the Middle East. In recent years, needs in this region have increased, and Israel is becoming more and more isolated internationally. As a short-term worker you'll be responding directly to these needs, becoming part of a network of NEM volunteers, working in cooperation with the local churches. In this way you'll contribute to the Christian testimony in the Middle East and to the Highway as described in Isaiah 19:23-25: The vision of future peace between Jew and Arab.

In Israel, the short-term workers share an apartment together with the coordinator. The rooms are relatively small and, depending on the number of participants, will be shared with a minimum of one, up to a maximum of three colleagues. NEM sends groups of a maximally six short-termers. In general, five days a week are reserved for voluntary work and one day for teaching. The teaching programme consists of lessons and excursions provided by one of our long-term NEM workers.

In the surrounding Arab countries, the short-term workers also share an apartment. During the teaching programme participants are introduced to the Arab people and culture, with an additional focus on the wanderings of the people of Israel. For security reasons, NEM works under a different name in the Arab world.

The Middle East is a region marked by conflict. However, since 1963, NEM has had a continuous presence in the Middle East. Not because NEM'ers are heroes but because it was decided, in consultation with the local authorities in the Middle East and the Dutch and other foreign embassies, that their continued presence in the region was justified. This does mean that we avoid risk areas and keep ourselves well informed of times and places of heightened risk. In the case of a threat of war or attack etc., there is immediate consultation between the NEM leadership, in the Middle East and in the Netherlands, and the previously mentioned authorities. We comply fully with their advice.
